The Opportunity

Pioneer Construction is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our team as a Construction Materials Laboratory Supervisor in the Kenora, Ontario area. In this role, you will lead laboratory operations in supporting construction projects through material testing, quality assurance, and team supervision. The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for coordinating lab personnel, overseeing testing and inspection processes, and ensuring all materials, procedures, and projects meet required specifications, industry standards, and safety requirements. This position plays a key role in maintaining quality control programs while supporting operational excellence across Pioneer’s construction activities.

Your Day-to-Day

  • Operate testing and sampling equipment with an understanding of safe handling and cleaning procedures
  • Conduct routine inspections of construction and aggregate materials
  • Supervise and coordinate duties for lab technicians including scheduling, training, and evaluation
  • Oversee the preparation, storage, testing, and analysis of asphalt and other aggregate material
  • Enforce compliance with all facets of Quality Control/Quality Assurance including structures, foundations, asphalt, concrete, grading, granular and electrical
  • Develop, implement, and monitor laboratory quality control programs and ensure employees are adhering to laboratory standards
  • Review and validate test results to ensure they meet project specifications and industry standards
  • Develop and deliver training programs to lab workers on testing processes, safety procedures, proper handling, storage methods, and equipment use
  • Maintain and analyze detailed records of test results, inspections, and quality control processes
  • Ensuring timely delivery of all samples to the applicable laboratories
  • Communicate with relevant stakeholders and present test results, answer questions, and resolve concerns.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work environment and equipment
  • Work in various weather conditions including inclement weather conditions
  • Work evenings, weekends, and extended hours as required to meet operational and project demands
  • Travel to job sites across Northern Ontario, including occasional out-of-town assignments with overnight stays
  • Work in accordance with and enforce all internal, client and regulated health and safety policies, procedures and/or regulations, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 

You Are a Good Fit If You Have

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Technology, Laboratory Technology, or a related field
  • Prior experience in a Senior Lab role or other supervisory roles
  • Possession of a valid G License is required.
  • Strong commitment to safety and teamwork

Considered an Asset:

  • Surface Miner Common Core
  • ACI certification
  • Aggregate and Asphalt CCIL certification

 

Skills & Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of construction materials including asphalt and other aggregates.
  • Proficiency in safely operating laboratory equipment including safe handling and cleaning procedures
  • Advanced understanding of testing procedures and standards for various construction materials and paving processes.
  • Ability to extract and compile data into reports
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure work quality and compliance are being appropriately monitored through inspections and observations
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Ability to perform physically intensive and strenuous tasks when required in accordance with OHSA requirements
  • Excellent communication skills with supervisors, coworkers, and clients
  • Ability to adapt to changing job requirements and schedules
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Professional attitude and strong work ethic

The pay range posted reflects base compensation only. Starting pay is based on skills, experience, and qualifications. Benefits and other incentives are offered separately.
