Life in Sudbury
Sudbury is known as a city of lakes. With 330 lakes juxtaposed by a vibrant downtown core, Sudbury boasts an unparalleled combination of urban conveniences and natural splendour. Situated within traditional Ojibwe lands, Sudbury has the third largest Francophone population in Canada (outside of Quebec), and is home to people of many different ethnic backgrounds as one of the most diverse, multilingual and multicultural communities in Canada.
Sudbury offers an affordable lifestyle with lower housing costs compared to other urban centres, and some of the lowest property taxes in Ontario. By car, we are just four hours from Toronto or quick a 50-minute flight. You can also take a beautiful, picturesque drive here from Ottawa in just over five hours.
Sudbury is the regional centre for learning and applied research in Northeastern Ontario, and includes a medical school, a school of architecture, two world-class colleges and a nationally renowned university. With a population of 165,000, Sudbury is the largest city in—and is the regional capital of—Northern Ontario. Our location serves as a hub for business, retail, health care and education for the region.
The Ontario government provides guidelines to make sure you have everything you need to Get Settled in Ontario. You can also contact local settlement organizations to get help and start connecting with the community. The YMCA and the Sudbury Multicultural Folk Art Association are great places to begin, and both have newcomer settlement programs for when you first arrive. If you prefer to receive services in French, Collège Boréal, Centre de santé communautaire du Grand Sudbury (CSCGS) and Réseau du Nord can help.
